The SAT was originally adopted by Harvard (by James B. Conant) as a way of moving Harvard towards a meritocracy.

"hire an editor to help craft their personal statement, or attend a private school with more attentive college counselors—but they cannot purchase a good SAT score. "

I wrote the personal statement for an applicant. She got in.
