The United States itself would benefit from a strengthened EU capable of asserting its collective will or pushing back against undue outside pressure from the likes of Trump. The United States would similarly benefit from the appropriate assertion of internal checks and balances from our Article I and Article III powers. Unchecked power of any kind is dangerous, at home and abroad. Unchecked power wielded by a madman in full meltdown mode, with ever more fantastical delusions of grandeur, who mistakes reality TV for reality, is a recipe for both global and domestic disaster, as we are seeing unfold before our eyes.

At this point the *only* chance we have to restore America's reputation is to impeach and remove Trump. That would mean that the Republican Party would have to renounce Trump and show the rest of the world that they're serious about acknowledging and correcting the damage he did.

Instead we have Thom Tillis talking about Trump's "legacy".

It blows my mind that they don't see this. And yet it's our only hope. Right now the modern Republican Party is forcing America to commit political suicide on the world stage. Historians will have to collaborate with psychologists to make sense of this era.

I’m with you 100% on this, and was jutting down the notes for an open letter to congressional republicans. It’s not the obvious mental meltdown that matters, thought that’s bad enough, it’s the consequences in the real world. Those we already see, overseas and domestic, and those we know are coming. The dereliction of duty is beyond description. Impeachment should be energetically led by congressional republicans, and should be decisive, unanimous, unequivocal. One huge problem is the invention of fake reality (like reality tv), but even that sleight of hand can’t blind congressional republicans, most of whom know enough to know better (one assumes).

The real solution to the Orbàn mess is to kick Hungary out of the EU if he stays in power.

I guess this provides a data point for your argument about the role of war / threats of war in state building.
