The DEI Diva: Harris. Had Biden chosen a better running mate we would not be in this situation.

Here in the states Democrats (and possibly Republicans) also have not yet acknowledged that many young people, especially men, are trending to the right. Witness that Democrats within the Beltway are seriously considering nominating Harris should Biden step aside. The problem would seem to be that many younger voters have not found a place or are not welcome within the silos that have become the Democratic and Republican parties.

A significant negative factor in current U.S. politics is the cult of identity and what some writers have termed "the oppression olympics." We are increasing sorted by race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. and are assumed to share policy preferences based solely on those traits. It's patently absurd, but younger Americans in particular seem to buy into this ideology, a bad sign for the future. Americans also are too quick to adopt the tribal analysis of left or right. The current U.S. Supreme Court is a good example. The Court is far more complex than a 6-3 right/left framework, as anyone who actually reads their decisions, concurrences, and dissents would quickly grasp. But the public writ large has bought into the "rightwing conservative court" mantra based on the media's narrative. Justice Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion (6-3) in Bostock, holding that Title VII protects gay men, lesbian women, and transgender individuals from employment discrimination on that basis. He also authored the 6-3 decision in McGirt upholding Native American rights under decades old treaties previously ignored by the courts. These are but two examples. It's quite true that Alito and Thomas are predictable in their decisions, as is Sotomayor, but the rest have very broad judicial views. Again, my worry is we are fast losing the ability to think critically and look beyond the headlines or social media posts by our tribal party leaders or aligned media telling us what to think based on identity and political tribe. All of this is very bad for our republic.

It is right to take Reform seriously and the examples of diversification of political viewpoints across sexes and generations are well made. The biggest story is the collapse of the Conservative Party. In addition the disappearance of the Greens and the failure of climate activists and lgbT minorities to impact party politics is interesting. British people as an electorate do not like activism, even when they are being screwed by the Conservatives.
