Sadly, the violence that Joyce abhorred, went on to end up in the Easter Rising, the Irish Civil War, and the "Troubles". Having ancestors that were Irish and Anglo/Scots Irish, I find the history of Ireland both fascinating and sad. I do have some sympathy for those that wanted to resurrect the Gaelic language and culture, in the face of British subjugation. Unfortunately as with all movements that may start out with good intentions, they can ultimately end up with overbearing nationalism and bigotry.
Ireland is a beautiful country, and I hope it can maintain its current trend, which is a 97/100 on the World Freedom score:
