"We need to acknowledge that frustration, and we need to have solutions that address that. You can pivot to: Democrats are the ones who've been trying to address this for years, and Republicans haven't lifted a freaking finger to reform our immigration system."

Utter nonsense. Biden came in and immediately ended Remain in Mexico, which was very effective at deterring illegal immigration. I have not heard Dems present any solutions other than Root Causes pablum.

I agree with Lis' conclusion that our country needs low-key leaders in the middle to defuse the revolutionary anger on both sides of the political extremism. It will buy us time for more people to grow up and negotiate acceptable compromises with each other

Seems like every generation has to learn for themselves that "the people" and the people who agree with you are not necessarily the same thing. Mostly good interview, but I'm uncomfortable with the term "normal people". How often has that led to some ugly places?

Neither Democrats nor Republicans want to solve the immigration problem. Both parties want the issue.

I love this episode. It’s absolutely necessary for Democrats to take people’s concerns about immigration, crime, youth gender transition, and other contentious issues seriously. They won’t listen to our economic message if they think we dismiss their social views.

I also love Lis’ take on the influence of The West Wing. While I loved it when it was on, in retrospect I think it did more harm than good. It gave young, highly educated progressives too much confidence in appointed officials (the kind many of them aspired to be) over elected politicians. I would even partly blame the show for congressional Democrats faring so poorly in the Obama years.
