"Given that baseline, Democrats would be well advised to portray themselves as the party of responsible reformers eager to make government more responsive to public opinion, more humble and willing to admit mistakes, and more eager to learn from those errors. If so many Latinos (and to a lesser extent Blacks) felt comfortable voting for a racist if they agree with him about other things, if they don't feel like that's going to endanger them, that seems pretty good evidence that racism doesn't have the sort of power it had even a generation or two ago. Why Can't Liberalism Take a Win, part one million.
I'm having trouble comprehending how you could be this blind. You even said it yourself, quite a few times in fact in your article, how it was the biggest republican win since 1988 or how given this repeat, it's more than a fluke, more like a solid repudiation. And then seemingly without missing a beat in what I can only assume wasn't meant to be ironic you talk about how you need to double down on failure, on overly radical ideas that I think should be clear to you by this point nobody wants or likes, and the only people who do generally only support because they're young (read: stupid), ignorant (read: stupid), or too wrapped up in identity politics to question and just accept (read: stupid). Exactly how do you define a shit show? Because I think even Helen Keller could see that Joe "Soup Brain" Biden's presidency was such a joke I'd laugh If it hadn't been so tragic. The only part of his body that still works are his fingers which is good because he needs them to point blame at everybody else but himself, his shrew of a wife or his fuckup, surviving son, which really is the tragedy, to get stuck with that one of all the kids to have to lose. Never let it be said God can't be an asshole. Still waiting on "Putin's Price Hike' to grind down, the one definitely not caused by pissing good money after bad over every person lying on an unemployment form, requesting unneeded rent relief or getting and having forgiven a PPP loan for their bogus business and it still wasn't enough to buy the black vote. Love that my hometown is an absolute tent city now, with hundreds of thousands of illegals, their syringes, their piss and shit flowing down my street too, thanks for that one. get on the next bus with them, straight to hell, please and thanks. I can only hope they start OD'ing or dying from exposure now that winter is coming. Nobody likes you. Take the hint and stop trying to ruin what little of a good thing we have left.
As always you and other progressives misread the "opposition." Many, possibly most, Trump voters did not vote for Trump but against the woke, progressive agenda of the Democrat party. Unfortunately, the uniparty rig the elections so that sane voices cannot be heard or voted for. The Republican leadership are nearly as progressive as the Democrats, thus the acronym RINO. These republicans in name only did their best to shut Trump down. The problem is that Trump, in spite of his ego, is for many of the things we are for, and, especially, against much of what we are against.
You try to represent us as reactionary, but we are not. We are republicans in the tradition of the founding fathers of our republic. We believe we have certain unalienable rights, among which are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We are not only born with our natural rights, we have them as soon as we are conceived, before our hearts start pumping or our minds start thinking. That is why we are anti-abortion. A lot of us are unclear about when life begins, but we are near unanimous in thinking that whenever it begins, it is human life and it is its own human life.
The right to liberty has a much different meaning from that part of liberal thinking. It means that we have the liberty to determine how we should live. The right to govern ourselves. The only power greater than ourselves is God. We believe we are creatures. We are what we were meant to be, not what we developed into from less human beings. We are not unanimous in believing how we were created, nor in who or what God is, but by and large, we believe, at least to some extent, in the Christian perspective of who we are within the universe, that we are accountable for what we are and what we do.
The pursuit of happiness is far different from the pursuit of pleasure. It is more in tune with the pursuit of satisfaction. While not, per se, the pursuit of good or holy or righteousness, it is knowing that the good, the holy, the righteous is the path to happiness; that bad, unholy, unrighteous detract from happiness. Treating ourselves and others rightly because we were created to be holy and righteous is the only path to our mutual happiness.
Those are the things we wish to conserve. And these are the things that we consider under attack by those who reject them, namely the liberals, progressives, and woke ideologues. We don't all expect, certainly not try to coerce, everyone to behave in the same way that come Christians do. But there are some behaviors that most people recognize should not occur in public. Very few people in this world go around in public naked, or excrete bodily waste, or copulate. It is a real stretch to argue the such behavior be acceptable to everybody. We are not prudes who don't accept it. And, I say outright, such public displays are not progress. Nor is killing the unborn. Nor is propagation of war on civilians.
Conservatives are not necessarily holy and righteous. Maybe not even mostly. Most of us recognize that human behavior, without discipline and restraint, tends toward bad, and worse follows bad progressively. Most of us believe that self-restraint and self-discipline is learnable and is more effective than coercion. Further, that it is best taught and learned from a young age. And it is best learned by example from loving parents and other family members. Misbehavior is more natural, and, unchecked, gets progressively worse.
Recovery from where libertine lifestyles has taken us will not be easy. It will be impossible without widespread commitment and effort and a recognition of its preferability. Immorality is as addictive as the worst drugs. Breaking our addictions will be painful and easily abandoned. There are few unaddicted; certainly too few to support very many while going through withdrawal. And the pushers will be unlikely to curb their efforts. Frankly, it appears a hopeless task. And I don't think Donald Trump will be willing or able to lead the effort. His followers are not much in favor of that kind of reform.
Many of the leaders of Christianity are as addicted to immorality the rest of mankind. The road to destruction wide, straight, and smooth, and the other way is narrow, winding, and exhausting. Besides, there are narrow gates and tempting exits. Shall I beat the dead horse further?
There have been times that Trump exhibited signs that he sees the light, but like with most of us, there are other times that indicate that he still addicted and still using. There are few voices and they are all crying in the wilderness. The thick brown smell of the pigpen still has hold of the prodigal son.
Now that the general election is over, it's time for the Democrats and Republicans to plan for the midterm elections. The temptation for the Democrats will be to assume that the first two years of Trump 47 will be a disaster. That may in fact prove to be the case; however, the Democrats would be wise to assume that the administration will be perceived as having both successes and failures over the next two to four years and formulate their strategy accordingly.
Ah yes, we mustn’t insult those future potential voters by disparaging them! Those voters who witnessed a clearly mentally incompetent narcissist and still handed him the nuclear football. Those voters who watched him fellate a microphone. Those voters who have listened to him shit talk every political opponent or disgruntled staffer, calling them absurd names like a 5th grade schoolboy whose rich parents protected him from getting the crap beaten out of him. No, no, no, we must listen and be attentive to these discerning folk, for they are now the majority, eh? I concur: Trump will plunge this country into such a morass as we have not seen since 1968, or 1929, or perhaps even 1861. And then perhaps, perhaps, it may dawn on the brave new Trump coalition that perhaps they chose unwisely. Perhaps ignoring all of the evidence spewing from this schmuck’s own lips that his reemergence was bound to be a disaster was a foolhardy flirtation with juvenile fantasy, all red hats and big trucks and testosterone fueled indignation of transgenders using the wrong bathrooms. But this is what politicians and salesmen do, when they want your vote or your money. They tell you what you want to hear. That’s why Jimmy Carter was so reviled - he broke that cardinal rule. Fine. Pander all you want. But some of us will insist on accountability, finally, when shit hits the fan. And that includes John Q. Public, who voted to reelect Dick Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Pathetic War Criminal Bush.
They are just people like us. I know a lot of them. They are good people. They are not horrific racists or immoral lackwits. They are as poisoned by their political bubble as you are by yours, and so they fear Democrats more than they dislike Trump. At the very least, most of them are earnestly doing what they think is best for the families, communities, and country. If Democrats are unable to persuade persuadable voters (which is what this election says: Democrats were unable to persuade even the same voters who voted for Joe Biden last time), then the Democrats had better try to figure out how that happened. If you want your sales pitch for "how did this happen?" to be "they are a bunch of horrible people" then you've already lost any opportunity you have for figuring out why you failed to persuade them, and are in fact pushing them further away.
I voted Harris. I would NOT have voted Harris if virtually anyone other than Trump were on the Republican ticket. Unless the Democrats very seriously change their tune, I'll be voting for a Republican for president in 2028, the first time I've ever done so since I started voting in the 1996 presidential election.
You do you. Your future party is intent on destroying the biosphere, putting Jesus in the classroom, and protecting the rights of child murderers to buy assault weapons. Go ahead. Do your thing. I’ll do mine.
You argued that those who voted for Trump don't deserve anything but disparagement. I'm countering that the disparagement of half the country is part of how Democrats lost the public trust. It seems like you're more interested in punishing those folks than you are in figuring out how to earn their trust back. If you think that the reign of Trump is going to bring them back to the fold, just remember they've all already seen what he's done, and they still voted for him. Again, how, given that, did Democrats lose trust so badly, and how can they regain it? They needn't appeal to (and shouldn't bother trying to appeal to, but should listen to and understand) the more hard-core among Trump's supporters. They need to regain the trust of the swing voters and the independents. You don't regain someone's trust by telling them how bad a person they are. You figure out why they no longer trust you.
This rant is exactly why Trump won. Just one example.
Just before the election Glenn Kessler gave Donald Trump 4 Pinocchio’s for claiming that Imane Khelif was/is a man. So much for fact checking. How about runaway media/elite bias? In real life, D. Trump was right and G. Kessler was wrong. The French endocrinologists who examined Imane Khelif found that he was/is male. The Bicetre hospital report leaked.
Excuse me, Trump didn’t suck off a mike while giving a public speech? He didn’t blackmail an ally to get dirt on a political opponent? He didn’t suggest shooting bleach during a horribly lethal pandemic? But he got it right calling out a transgendered athlete? So that’s why he qualifies for the presidency? Yep, your comment is exactly why Trump won. Don’t cry for me, Argentina, when RFK Jr. outlaws vaccines and dismantles public health so we can invite polio and God knows what else devastating our citizenry. Keep spouting your stupid smug irrelevant bullshit.
Harris claimed that Michael Brown was "murdered" even though Obama's justice department found that Michael Brown was a violent thug and the Darren Wilson was entirely innocent. As for the supposed "blackmail", it never happened. Read the actual transcript for what D. Trump said.
Hahaha. Deflect and whatabout, never refute. I read the transcript, and listened to Vindman. Ever hear of Lev Parnas? “Runaway media/elite bias”? Hahaha. Ever hear of the nearly $800 billion Fox had to pay for lying their asses off about election fraud? Or having to fire Tucker Carlson to save them from getting destroyed in another lawsuit? We’re done. Enjoy your victory. You deserved it, pulling off the biggest con game in political history. Just stay out of the bunker.
You support(ed) Imane Khelif. The “hero’ of the Olympics. That’s pretty low. How low can one person go? Very low it would seem.
You support(ed) the “hero” of Burisma. Remember him? His name was Biden. That’s pretty low. How low can one person go? Very low it would seem.
You support(ed) the “hero” of Ferguson, MO. Remember him? His name was Michael Brown. That’s pretty low. How low can one person go? Very low it would seem.
DEI is racism. Woke is hate. Some people support racism. Some people are opposed. Some people are pro-hate. Some people are anti-hate. Some people support cheating (at sports). Some people are opposed to cheating.
You lose. The medical details about imane Khelif leaked from the Bicetre hospital in Paris. He was/is/will always be male. Glenn Kessler just lied. Donald Trump told the truth. Given that the medical report leaked on 2024-10-24 and the Kessler lies are from 2024-11-04, he knew he was lying. Trust in the MSM is at an all-time low. Trust in the MSM is even lower than trust in Congress. Of course, any positive value for trust in the MSM is unjustified. A democrat by the name of Seth Moulton said ‘ “I have two little girls,” Moulton said. “I don’t want them getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete, but as a Democrat I’m supposed to be afraid to say that.” ’ Moulton’s top aide resigned.
The centrists deliberately pandered to them by demanding we reject a nominee who wanted to institute Medicare for all. They were scared to death that Trump's voters would call us commies. Plenty of people are arguing that we should pander to the climate change deniers because Trump voters are afraid of losing jobs and trucks. We've already pandered to them by de-emphasizing gun control. We constantly pander to them by having our candidates recite the obligatory "faith" affirmations, because a secularist who thinks religion is bullshit will terrify Trump voters. They don't "pander" to us, they tell us to take our SCOTUS nominees and shove them up our ass, or our bipartisan immigration reform efforts with enormous compromise...and that goes in the same place.
If the victorious majority can be made so ecstatic by the electoral fruits of their being minority ruled by the most morbidly wealthy fraction of the One Percenters with interests ridiculously different than theirs maybe some of the rest of us should think about capitalizing on the wonders of minority rule in a democratic society by coming up with our own minority with the juice to rule a majority so stupid as to keep pinning their hopes on a franchise that has long since been neutered by the already-mentioned morbidly wealthy gals and guys who so well-documentedly keep getting their way no matter how the voting goes and no matter how plainly their way goes against the grain of what’s best for everybody but them.
The new good kind of minority I have in mind of course are the anti-establishment types on the donkey side of the onetime political divide between a party for the people and one for the more and more monstrous corporations that have so entirely erased the divide in question as to render laughable the democratic franchise we might finally rehabilitate if a mere five or six percent or less of the registered donkeys in question made it dead clear they were stubbornly never going to vote ever again for a self-serving servant of the One Percent even if it meant the elephant side of the pretend political divide kept winning every election cycle between this last one and the last one ever that comes because the great majority of us did nothing but keep rolling over for a few masters of the universe and their servants in this stupid mission they’re on to blow this whole human experiment up.
My guess is that even a blindly self-interested and self-impressed and stubborn bunch like the longer and longer-toothed ones up there at the front of the establishment donkey coffle would soon see the writing on the wall that said that without the votes of the most grudging of the old nose-holders they could never expect to keep meeting their personal needs as ridiculously ambitious people if they kept going with the lefty loosey choice on the industrial-strength spigots delivering them the biblical flood’s-worth of the dark and other kinds of money that suddenly would become such an uncrossable sea between them and their rightful places at the head of the democrats that they’d have to surrender their feather beds as pretend servants of the people and earn their spots as lawmakers the old-fashioned anti-plutocratic way that among other things would need to entail their using every tool at their ridiculously ambitious person’s disposal to force the righty vyers with them for the top spots in the public eye to give the already-mentioned spigots a good twist of the righty tighty persuasion.
And even if the good twists in question were slow in coming and so only the worst of the worst of the corporate monsters’ conservative servants got themselves elected to all the highest offices for a while, how long could it be before all the fresh horrors running riot in this dystopian society the corporate minority has formed for us get blamed on the only so-called public servants still cashing in on the corporate monsters’ ability to fill the country’s highest offices with their sick ambitious minions?
So by my calculations a minority as tiny as 2.6 percent of America’s 188 million or so registered voters (1.5 percent of the population at large) could save the day by connecting online maybe and deciding in one inordinately people-power-filled voice to let the powers that be in the donkey party and all the enablers below them know that come midterm election time they can count on not counting on their five million or so votes for anybody who hasn’t cut ties with the relative handful of rich idiots bankrolling this barreling of us Americans and everybody else deeper and deeper into this already-mentioned dystopia.
"Given that baseline, Democrats would be well advised to portray themselves as the party of responsible reformers eager to make government more responsive to public opinion, more humble and willing to admit mistakes, and more eager to learn from those errors. Democrats need to help restore trust and confidence in government before seeking to expand its reach."
I cannot reinforce this more strongly.
If so many Latinos (and to a lesser extent Blacks) felt comfortable voting for a racist if they agree with him about other things, if they don't feel like that's going to endanger them, that seems pretty good evidence that racism doesn't have the sort of power it had even a generation or two ago. Is believing that transwomen shouldn't compete in women's sport "right" or "populist" or both? If you're inclined to answer, please also do:
Being against packing SCOTUS;
Wanting to keep the filibuster;
Thinking that No, the "genocide" in Gaza 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 real and the pro-Hamas protestors 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 have a point;
Preferring the DeVos Education Department to the current one;
Being against a government office that decides what constitutes "disinformation";
Strongly disapproving of lying to the electorate about the state of the President's acuity.

No one is suggesting “pandering” to Trump’s voters. Unless you think that understanding =pandering.
The centrists deliberately pandered to them by demanding we reject a nominee who wanted to institute Medicare for all. They were scared to death that Trump's voters would call us commies.
