He really was a big disappointment. As someone who can't stand Poilievre from his days as chief toady in the Harper government (prior to Trudeau), I am at the point where the center left needs a total and complete drubbing so they can rebuild as something serious instead of the aspirational nonsense the current incarnation is in. The NDP (*technically* left of the current Liberals) also need a complete wipeout. It will be interesting to see if Poilievre, unlike Trudeau and Harper will actually delegate and decenter power to his caucus or rule like the smug geniuses Harper and Trudeau thought they were.... So good luck Poilievre and (hopefully) team. Lets see if they have more in them than just meme and (very justified) ridicule... Its always easy to take the high road when not in power.

Although I don’t know that much about Canadian politics, I will still ask the question: How far would he have gone if his name wasn’t Trudeau?

I do think it's a testament to his skills that I could write a whole thing like this without feeling I needed to refer to dad. Trudeau made all kinds of mistakes, but he's his own man.

You mean Castro? Yes, Justin is his own man, but without the name of his adoptive father he'd still be a snowboard instructor.

Ok I understand the text in general and it is about new political changes and realites after the 2010s. But why is carbon tax "woke"? It is originally idea by neo-liberal economists as Friedman who advocated that taxes on environmental damage should be combined with reducation of taxes on income and wages

Quico, I agree with your statement to Trudeau’s legacy. I would add that I think his government did well in comparison to Canada’s peers with Covid.

In the negative I would say he brought a level cynicism and smugness that I’ve not seen in Canadian politics. The Atlantic home oil deal drove a massive hole in the carbon tax which was not the biggest issue until that exemption. I would add that the massive growth in government spending (which has been a contributor to inflation) and public servants with a corresponding decrease in service levels is going to be a long road to recover from.
