I agree that there are legitimate concerns about the fate of our democracy in the coming years but I believe also that the sheer size of the country, the fact that we seem so evenly divided, our system of federalism and checks and balances, an underlying deep commitment to freedom of speech, our religious, ethnic and racial diversity, and perhaps most importantly, the degree of trust we exhibit toward each other in the conduct of our daily lives, will likely see us through any crisis. Trump and Trumpism is a real threat but my own sense is that it is a fever that will pass. One important way to defeat that threat is for the Biden administration to succeed. It makes the coming few months particularly critical. I remain optimistic. A friend more alert than I am to potential danger informed me of a recent poll showing that 44% of Republicans want Trump to run again. That is troubling but doesn't it also mean that 56% don't or are at least not convinced that he should run?

No, no, no! It is not true that no one apart from the Woke people believes in anything. The Trumpists certainly believe lots of [mostly crazy] things. And the progressives believe lots of things too [usually, but not always, less crazily] . The problem is that the progressives believe what they believe SO MUCH, and are so deeply frightened by Trump crowd, that they don't dare upset the Woke people. They feel they need the Woke faction to help them make common cause against the Trump forces. It's not a lack of belief in things, it's terror that the Trumpists could win if more level-headed people try to break through.

Jeffrey Goldberg would allow a Holocaust denier to speak from his podium, but Kevin Williamson’s a bridge too far? Doesn’t that seem a tad disordered?

Good. Thank you. Why the dems have gone hard core censorship and anti free speech is beyond me. Precludes my support.
