Excellent essay. It has been sad to watch successive state ACLU chapters choose elite free speech over egalitarian over the last decade, especially considering their history of supporting the latter.

Very well written article regarding differences between Europe and USA. There is a lot of improvement for all EU countries to have more freedom. Jacob, how do you view the situation in Denmark regarding the burka ban, begging ban, and restrictions towards asylum-seekers?

Thanks Vladan, from the point of view of free speech I find the burqa ban troubling since in effect it is aimed at suppressing religious expression (even if I strongly abhor the symbolism of Taliban style burqas). I’m generally in favour of selective immigration policies in social welfare states like Denmark, where - unlike the US, Canada and

Australia - many immigrant groups have not integrated well. In short I’m very much in favour of diversity but based on the premise of “benign tribalism” in which soft patriotism and certain other fundamental values are shared by most.
