It's always a pleasure listening to Mr. Hamid. It seems to me that Mr. Mounk never approached an answer to Mr. Hamid's most basic question: "What's the alternative?"

Also, while I think Mr. Hamid's description of Israel as illiberal is more or less reasonable (the ease of getting citizenship for a spouse is more a quibble than a substantive societal critique), Israel is simply the odd-man-out among states, given it's definition as the state of the Jews and the lack of parallels to the Jews among the nations.

The aggressive secularism of France (I agree that its restrictions on religious clothing are needlessly illiberal) is the rare case where a country might benefit from importing a dose of American wokeness. Melenchon came a close third in the 2022 election, and like Sanders a lot of his supporters are young. If they turn out to be socially progressive as well as economically left-wing (it's conceivable that the highly educated among them are), France could see a sizeable push within its electorate for better treatment of Muslims.
