Assuming that Arevalo is elected president, what will happen in Guatemala after that? I believe that successful democratic republics have the institutions, albeit nascent, for governing relatively corruption free prior to their first national elections. Are there institutions in Guatemala that will help Arevalo govern the nation? If not, then there is no reason for optimism.

This new hope for Guatemala and redemption for America touch a chord in me. I was an American 12 year old still getting used to television watching with an interest I couldn’t understand confusing news stories from what was called “Latin America.” Guatemala because of oil had a prominent place in those discussions. It seemed to me that they were getting a lot of advice not all of it in their best interest. But each immediate crisis passed until the next one which was handled in the same fashion.

I am glad that President Biden is sending a more uniformly supportive statement and hope that this week’s election will bring a parliament ready to act. Supportively.
