I don’t know how I missed this. Every time I think about canceling all of my Substack subscriptions, a fine analysis such as this comes along that adds a little bit more to my worldview. Perhaps this is because “the press looked away” and therefore, made understanding what is true that much harder. I don’t recall reading about this in Le Monde, although I might have missed that too.
It is indeed astonishing that leading French papers relegated this episode to a footnote in their eulogies. I suspect it did register with voters though. A year later Jospin was humiliated at the polls and he never recovered. The socialists ignored common decency (thou shalt not lie too outrageously) at their peril.
