They killed thousands of children with no regret, no remorse and only excuses and denials. This piece confirms they have very few qualms about the dehumanization and destruction done in their name.

No regrets? No remorse? This is Hamas propaganda. These are profoundly ignorant statements. If Hamas didn't have as their war aim as many Palestinian casualties as possible, there would be far fewer. But dupes like you take up the propaganda and spread it. Not getting rid of Hamas - as looks likely - will result in more future dead Israelis, and far more dead Palestinians.

I don’t have to spread Hamas propaganda I can just listen to the leaders and watch land confiscation in the West Bank without a peep from anyone. It’s really simple.

Civilian casualties in war is tragic but not new, and especially unavoidable when facing a guerrilla terrorist group like Hamas that uses its own people's death and suffering to further its war goals.

Thing is that the war was nothing but revenge. Oct 7 only happened because Bibi deliberately ignored reports that it was coming and in fact weakened the border defenses to the point of criminal negligence. With drone surveillance Israel could easily stop any rocket attacks before they were launched. Nope, the slaughter in Gaza was Bibi and Hamas working together to slaughter the people. Bibi wants revenge, and Hamas wants martyrs -- so they had a common agenda.

I only pay taxes to and my politicians support one of those. That’s why I’m concerned. If Hamas was being excused in the Oval Office I’d be outraged.

You really just need to look at aerial photographs and the rapid settling of the West Bank to know what’s going on. Weird how many excuses we make.

CarlW's avatar

How do aerial photographs tell you anything about the regret or remorse of Israelis? These tell you about the devastation - which Hamas brought on themselves and their neighbors by stealing and spending massive amounts of aid money and 15 years building the infrastructure (300-500 miles of lighted, air conditioned tunnels) for their terrorist war. A war where Palestinian death are the goal. Your attitude is exactly what Hamas seeks from useful idiots and your case shows they have succeeded. Your ilk is more blameworthy for Palestinian suffering than anyone but Hamas itself.

The aerial photographs tell me about the war crimes committed against civilians and children. Ruthless and without regard for human life. Your response is proof of that. You just don’t get it.

If you had intelligent regard for human life, you wouldn't continue making ignorant statements about what is happening and has happened in Gaza. All that does is encourage and provide cover for the actual malefactors. The result is the continuing futile attempt to redeem Islam and eliminate the remaining Jews from the Eastern hemisphere. It won't happen. It's a death wish and you encourage it by spreading lies about the death cult behind it.

Thank you, William, and thank you Persuasion for publishing this truthful, if painful portrait of Israelis in the current moment. I have a friend from one of the southern kibbutzim, one just outside the range of the terrorist attack. But of course, it's a very small country and she knew and loved people who were killed and kidnapped. She and her family had been protesting the government regularly before October 7th. They have not ceased to do so almost every week since then. Your quotes, descriptions and depictions match what I have learned from her over the years and especially since Oct. 7th. You are right--people are deeply traumatized, yet they also refuse to be defeated, even as their government has abandoned them.

I am going to comment on an issue which can seem less important than the tragedy and the atrocities. But those have been extensively written about. The author mentions that the people of Israel were let down by their government in many ways, one being that October 7 happened. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist ( although I often do in these comments). But HOW did that happen? Surely Israel spends more per capita on defense than any other nation? Israel knows that it shares borders with extremely hostile, terrorism prone, neighbors. Israel surely has the highest of high tech border surveillance.

Israeli intelligence is legendary. Remember the exploding pagers? So HOW was it possible that those terrorists made their plans for October 7, came into Israel, raised havoc for 7 hours, kidnapped people? How could it possibly take so long to respond?

Because Bibi was looking for a pretext to render Gaza uninhabitable in preparation for ethnic cleansing. He wanted an 'incident', but I dare say he got a bigger incident than he was planning on. Intelligence knew the plans in detail.

I love thoughtful articles and this one definitely was thoughtful. Just a few thoughts - in many places it references “Israelis” and other places “Jewish Israelis” - like Israeli’s love kids/families - they get together for Seder meals… I really got the impression the article top to bottom was about Jewish Israelis (and could have been clearer about that - as it didn’t seem to address the “complicated” trauma of Arab Israelis at all. I was also pretty disappointed that the article avoided mentioning the complexity of the settler terrorist violence in the West Bank. There is an article in Haaretz every day mentioning and zero coverage in US. I would think the weaponization of the settlers adds manifestly to the complexity and trauma of all Israelis.

I recognize a lot of this from news reports and essays like this one, not from real life, but hey, I just live here. Oh, and apparently I'm not part of the solution to anything, since the author's evenhandedness in doling out responsibility to Israelis and Gazans is ridiculous.
