This is one of the best interviews that Yasha has done. Eboo’s approach seems to me to be the correct one for those who are interested in living in a just society that seeks to be a better society. I am a culture junkie who gets a thrill out of experiencing different people and languages. I detest the institutionalized efforts to cut me off from others under the cloak of diversity. Yes, we can understanding each other and gain great satisfaction from the effort. Describing diverse groups as a potluck works perfectly. Sign me up.

In order to work across differences, the parties involved must sooner rather than later share at least some of the same goals. This means getting beyond shouting and believing slogans that envision a win - lose future. The problem at universities is that the people doing the loudest protesting have so very little at stake in the outcome of the subject conflict whatever it is. To the protestors it all seems to be a matter of principle and, therefore, there is nothing compromisable to reach common goals.

Wonderful discussion. I always finish listening to or reading Mr. Patel feeling a little more optimistic and upbeat, probably because he is, and he is a person who so transparently lives his beliefs. He's a humanitarian in all the best and broadest senses of that word.
