Anyone who thinks their government should punish offensive speech should consider what will happen when their political opponents have that power.

The world is falling into a deep hole of authoritarianism that we will never recover from specifically because the American Democrats have taken over and are intent to make it so.

In the US restrictions on free speech are often justified by the need to prevent "harm". As if we are now vulnerable children needing protection by the state. Of course citizens and officials should condemn any such hateful actions. That is very different from suppressing dissent.

This may also relate to the widespread conflation of physical with emotional harm. There's already plenty of enforcement against "hate speech" by university administrations, DEI authorities and social-media platforms. I imagine that this comment would not be up long -- if it made it up at all -- were it to include certain words that have been deemed too insulting to be expressed.

How important and influential is a resolution from the UN Human Rights Council? Admittedly, this particular resolution gives cover to authoritarian regimes but only to do things that they would do even without the resolution.
