The stakes were hardly low in A Few Good Men, or Misery, or Stand by Me. For that matter, he first became a public figure making humor out of a deeply divided America; even before All in the Family he was a writer on the Smothers Brothers.
I'm not sure what my point is, except that what he contributed to this culture was something good.
Very true, Sam, and beautifully stated, that the world has lost its faith in the future. But it’s not true that we don’t really know what’s causing it. Foer put his finger on it but stopped just short. It’s hard to admit when we’re wrong , as Trumpists refuse to see who their leader really is, despite his kicking the dead in the face. A beloved face at that. And as you say, the face of the brain at the heart of optimism. Similarly, we in the left have been wrong about multiculturalism, though our goals were good. We’ve allowed foreigners redefine what Americannness is about. And it’s worse in Canada. Maybe worse yet in the UK, France and Belgium. Worst still in Sudan, Niger and Nigeria. Now our culture is hollowed out and it’s OK to kill the right people for the right reasons. Call me an islamaphobe. I’m fine with it. In fact, I’m terrified by the idea that Muslims should have the right to choose their oppressive, bellicose culture in an American, or a Dutch, or a Swedish milieu when it tramples on the rights and beliefs of their new home country. Of course I mean “not all Muslims”. I have three Muslim neighbours in my townhouse condo. So let’s have this real debate now, when it really matters. And finally, let’s look at another story: America from 9/11 to today. What I see is an America bloodied but increasingly bowed by “not all Muslims”. We know which Muslims — it’s the ones in Bondi Beach who just “Globalized the Intifada” as well as those who claim it’s just a meaningless phrase in support of Palestinians, like New York’s new mayor, the epitome of Western multiculturalism, and hopefully its high point. it’s time for the leaders of nations of the West, and its commentators, to strap on their heads and fight now.
Perfect analysis of the state of affairs right now. It’s one horror after another. I wish I had the words - but you have written them for me. Thank you.
The news is tragic and sad. But if phycological disfunction and substance abuse is determined a cause, based on Reiner's political ranting, the apple will not have fallen far from the tree except for the type of substance being a screen and keyboard rather than another drug.
Where have you been for the last 50 years? The United States undeniably built its civic architecture on Christian moral principles: covenantal thinking, natural law, human dignity, and the moral accountability of leaders. These were formative logics embedded in law, rhetoric, and public life.
The late 19th Century Court decisions and intellectual movements began separating common public schools from religious instruction, laying the groundwork for later secularization. The Progressive of the earliest 20th century saw social science at the center of human perfectibility separated from divine accountability
The sexual revolution of the 60’s and the pill delinked sex and pregnancy, and the evolution of utopian optimistic visions in the Great Society emanated from the state independent of God. 1973 – Roe v. Wade was the reframing of individual autonomy and a decisive break from Christian moral logic about life and dignity.
By the end of the century sights of open homosexuality and the President of the United States having his dick sucked in the White House might have been the moments marking the end of the civic probity on which the nation was built. But if that was not the end , then the release of the mentally incapable into our streets, then the acceptance of drugs in our society, even their adulation among those with elite or celebrity status, was the transformational end.
Clearly those seeking or advocating the restoration of a Christian civic identity are reacting to the debacle you describe, all complicated by race. I am not attempting to thump a Bible, but point out that our condition is the shift to legal authority to that which rests on individual moral authority.
Some where in that total loss of moral authority rests Rob Reiner’s optimism and the depravity of Nick Reiner.

Perhaps, if we want a high-trust society, we might try not doing wholesale demographic replacement.
Do you mean the kind of demographic replacement that the European settlers performed in the Americas?
"Mass immigration is actually a form of war for conquest"
Well, when you put it that way, that's an even better reason to stop it!
Your logical inconsistency is truly remarkable.
