Its a little myopic to single out the right for adopting tactics similar to what the left had already been using...Saul Alinsky indeed

It should also be noted that conservatives' issue with big government is predominately from the Federal level, with the states retaining rights to run as they see fit with little Federal interference.

Exactly what I was thinking. The whole point is government at the local level. DeSantis is governing the state he was elected to govern.

"But the biggest piece of evidence of this evolution in favor of bigger government is the use of state coercion to fight “woke-ism.”

The author is either missing the big picture, or purposely obscuring the connections.

Republicans, in general, see the role of government as providing material safety and security for its constituents. There is no interest in increasing the size and scope of government other than what is required for this. The majority constituents of Florida see the indoctrination of children into the woke ideology as being dangerous for the future of those children, for their families and for the people of their state. Woke ideology threatens safety and security, and hence Republicans are fine using government authority to oppose it and defeat it.

Democrats do the same but with a wink and a lie... that for example, they make the case that Christianity is a threat to safety and security of people and thus should be purged from the public sphere by "progressive" government authority and edict. They push this while also pushing the practice of Islam being a great religion and Muslims being persecuted victims.

Disney now has men with beards in dresses to greet guests. Disney deserves all the grief it gets. Sadly, some teachers in Florida want drag shows for 1st graders. Parents object. The state of Florida has to intervene. Sadly, it get worse. Some teachers are now using the "Gingerbread person" in class. The "Gingerbread person" claims that sex is spectrum. That will come as quite a surprise to Biologists.

“The regrettable upshot of the woke ascendancy is that publicly traded corporations have become combatants in battles over American politics and culture, almost invariably siding with leftist causes ... In this environment, old-guard corporate Republicanism isn’t up to the task at hand.”

What is the counter-argument to this?

Politicians can bloviate and posture, but businesses still have to deliver goods and services legally and at a profit. States (and countries) can move to the left or right, but most citizens want to provide for themselves. The 2024 election may be too soon to see the results of this latest round of culture wars, but there will be an accounting.
