"Gen Z were the guinea pigs in this uncontrolled global social experiment." Yes, in fact, we are all guinea pigs in the larger experiment of the cell phone itself. But if we found out that the phone, not social media were the culprit, the bringer of mental distress, would anything change? As a trog who never got a phone I see the world through the eyes of the left behind. It's not pretty. The commitment to the tool that breaks apart human interaction is firm. The convenience is undeniable and the harm is palpable.

Terrific! Thanks for writing this! It gives me hope whenever I see somebody writing and talking about algorithmic derangement syndrome. To my mind this might be the mother of all social health issues--and the one that is spawning much of the prevailing insanity that plagues our politics, our schools, and our media institutions. When "The Social Dilemma" was released in 2020 I got so excited because they did a terrific job and I really expected the movie to spark a wave of awareness as occured in the 70's and 80's with regard to cigarette smoking. The non-reaction to that documentary---and the downplaying of these problems by META operatives--has been very disheartening to me. This great essay is a welcome breath of fresh air!
